" Richard Metzger Most people of a certain age automatically think of the New Dance Show in terms of a classic Detroit television show to feature local dancers, but a lot of people aren’t readily aware of the fact that the New Dance Show had a local predecessor. I thank my father for giving me a love of fixings and DIY shops. An abiding childhood memory is going to Atlantic DIY store early on a Saturday morning to get something-or-other my Dad needed to make something-else-or-other. Because he was always making something-or-other. He gave me this sense that it is possible to make anything. That I can make anything. If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you will keep getting what you‘ve been getting. - Dave Ramsey. Well. This is our favourite grocery store chain EVER, and we have lived in four provinces, so I've had experience with groceries. But what makes it our favourite is the staff. The staff, and the fact that there are practically never any line-ups, because they always have the check-outs adequately staffed. I don't know what Farm Boy is paying their staff at the Cornwall store, but whatever it is, they should double it. Recently our eats have been fantastic. We have decided that this summer is the perfect time to introduce Bug-A-Boo to the idea of household chores. We have also decided that we will be giving her an allowance for doing these chores to start teaching her about the value of money. Back in the day, before the invention of supermarkets, most of our food was unpackaged and much of it was fresh. I remember a time when there were little grocery shops on suburban corners which sold a wide variety of food. We'd go there, the shop owner knew us by our first name, and we would buy just a small amount of food that we would eat that day. Many of the people who shopped at these little stores also had a vegetable patch at home so tomatoes, potatoes, salads and green leaves were grown and eaten fresh from the backyard garden.
When we bought meat, it wasn't an unidentifiable slice of flesh on a polystyrene tray covered with plastic wrap that was plucked from a refrigerated open case.We walked into butcher shops onto a floor that was covered with saw dust that contained a few drops of blood fallen from the carcasses hanging in plain view in the shop. We recognised the animal our meat came from, we knew how the animal was cut up and we knew our pork, beef, lamb and chicken cuts. I still buy meat from a butcher who buys local meat carcasses that hang in the store in full view. I wouldn't buy anything from a butcher who buys meat in boxes and vacuum packs - that food has been processed in an unseen location. Choice has been taken away from me.
